THE operation of the Barrick mine (Porgera Joint Venture) has been scaled down because a road block along the Laiagam-Porgera in Wabag, Enga, is stopping trucks from bringing in supplies.
Locals have stopped work to clear the landslide blocking the road unless the Government settles some outstanding payments.
Trucks delivering fuel and goods to the mining township and surrounding areas in Enga could not get through because of the road block in the area. The locals are allowing through only light goods vehicles.
Sources at the mine said the 3000 employees and mine operations were affected by the lack of supplies.
“We as the investor have attempted to ensure that locals remove the landslip to allow traffic and normal operations but failed hence, we need the Road Transport Association  and government backing,” a source said.
