Mining Minister wants government to control the NGOs

In a predictable move that signals the government is loosing the debate over the safety of dumping 100 million tons of waste from the Ramu mine into the sea, Mining Minister John Pundari, has suggested the government set up a body to control the activities of NGOs.

The Minister has released a Press Statement in which he advocates for a governing body that would ensure NGOs work within a set policy framework.

Under the Minister’s plans NGOs would no longer be able to act as a watchdog on government activities or suggest or pursue alternative development models, instead they would have to “partner and complement the government”.

Although the Minister fails to name any individual or organization he claims the move is necessary to protect the people “from these selfish and unscrupulous individuals and entities calling themselves NGOs”.

“…partner and complement the govt.”? The whole point of an NGO is to be unaligned to govt. Don’t waste your time Pundari – this is democracy.
